Helbrecht: Sin of Hope — a new Black Templars novel

On 3 October Black Library releases Mike Vincent's Helbrecht: Sin of Hope, in which the High Marshal of the Black Templars must accept the help of the Leagues of Votann — an ally he would rather not have.

Black Library has a new novel about High Marshal Helbrecht: Helbrecht: Sin of Hope by Mike Vincent, who previously wrote the Night Lords novel The Remnant Blade and the Tallarn tank-crew short story Exterminator. The book is out on 3 October 2026 as a standard hardback; a Special Edition went up for pre-order on 23 September and is available while stocks last.

What the book is about

Helbrecht continues his crusade against the Ruinous Powers, spurred on by a glimpse of a future in which the Imperium is renewed. He leads the brothers of the Black Templars Chapter alongside Elysian drop troops of the Astra Militarum. When fate — or providence — grants him a distasteful ally in the Leagues of Votann, the High Marshal must decide what he is willing to forsake in pursuit of triumph, for rekindling that ancient glory may push him to the very brink.

What the author says

In an interview with Warhammer Community, Vincent admitted that getting into Helbrecht's head took a while: he chose to start at a distance and open the character up gradually as the novel goes on. The Leagues of Votann were a deliberate choice of ally — in his words, the Kin have a deep, ancient connection to Terra and sit in a grey area between an ally of convenience and an outright xenos society.

Black Templars tend to struggle with grey areas! Theirs is very much a 'with us or against us' mentality.
— Mike Vincent

Where to start

Helbrecht's first major outing in prose is Guy Haley's Space Marine Battles novel, in which the newly raised High Marshal leads his Chapter against the last xenos stronghold beneath the Ghoul Stars. It is in our catalog and makes a good entry point before the new book.
