Horus Heresy reading order: where to start
The Horus Heresy runs to more than fifty books, but you do not need all of them. Here is where to begin, how release order differs from chronology, and a core path of about fifteen novels that carries the story to the walls of Terra.

The Horus Heresy is the civil war that ends the Great Crusade: the Warmaster Horus, the Emperor's favoured son, turns half of the Space Marine Legions against their father. Black Library has been telling this story since 2006, and the main series alone holds more than fifty volumes, with novellas, anthologies and audio dramas around it. That size is the main obstacle for a new reader. The good news is that the series was written to be entered from the front, and a well-chosen fifteen books give you the whole shape of the war.
Release order or chronology?
There are two ways to read the Heresy. Release order follows the numbering of the main series: books appear as the authors wrote them, and each one assumes you know what came out before. Chronological order sorts every story by its date in the setting, from the last years of the Great Crusade in M30 to the Siege of Terra in 014.M31. Chronology looks tidier, but it puts prequels and short stories first and spoils reveals the early novels were built around. For a first read, release order is the safer choice; chronology works best on a second pass, or as a map when you want to know where a particular story fits.
Both orders are kept on the site. The series page lists the main novels in publication order; the chronology page arranges novels, novellas, short stories and audio dramas by in-universe date.
Start here: the opening trilogy
The first three books form one arc and should be read together, in this order. They follow the Luna Wolves at the height of the Great Crusade and show how a loyal son becomes a traitor. Almost everything later in the series looks back to them.
Right after: the warning
The core path through the main series
After the first four books the series stops being a single line. Each novel follows one Legion or one front, and you can safely skip around. The selection below keeps to release order where it matters and picks the books that later volumes refer back to most. Treat it as a spine: whenever a Legion catches your interest, the series page has the rest of its story.
The Siege of Terra, briefly
The main series ends in 2019, and the finale continues as a separate series, Siege of Terra: novels and novellas set in 014.M31, read in their own order. Begin with The Solar War, which opens the assault on the Sol System, and finish with the three volumes of The End and the Death. It reads best once you know the main cast, so leave it until you have finished the core path.
What to read next
Once the core path is done, the rest of the main series fills in the Legions you have only glimpsed: the Dark Angels, the Iron Hands, the White Scars, the Night Lords. The Primarchs series gives each of the Emperor's sons a short novel of his own, mostly set before the war, and is a light way to meet a Legion before its Heresy books. And when the order of events starts to blur, the Horus Heresy era page and the chronology series put every story in its place.
